Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Why San Pedro Homeowners Choose HeatShield Chimney Cleaning
We provide independent HeatShield chimney cleaning and firebox repair throughout San Pedro, CA, and our crews work with the HeatShield refractory system more than most shops in the harbor area. What sets our HeatShield work apart is that we diagnose the moisture problem before we coat anything: a HeatShield firebox only fails when water gets to it, and in San Pedro the salt air and uncapped flues are usually the culprit. So we don’t just sweep and resurface. We find the leak, fix the water entry, then make the repair hold. Call (833) 576-1522 if you’re seeing cracks in a HeatShield firebox or smoke rolling back into the room. We answer 24/7. Fast dispatch from 7am to 7pm, Sunday through Friday.
Why Trust Chimney Sweep San Pedro for Your HeatShield Chimney Cleaning?
Jerry Ellison grew up down by Ports O’ Call Village and has spent most of his adult life working on the chimneys in this harbor community. He went through the construction technology program at Harbor College, then put in well over a decade on chimney cleaning and masonry repair before starting Chimney Sweep San Pedro in 2016. That background matters on a HeatShield job, because the refractory mortar has to cure and bond to brick the right way. If it’s applied over loose soot, crumbling joints, or a firebox that’s still pulling moisture from a bad crown, it won’t hold. We read HeatShield wear patterns the way a mason reads brick. Cracks that follow mortar lines mean one thing. Coating that lifts in sheets means another. Chalky white breakdown on a gas log firebox tells a different story again. We figure out which one you have before we recommend a dollar of work. As an independent HeatShield service provider, we’re not authorized by the manufacturer, and we don’t pretend to be. What we are is thorough. Jerry’s line on every job is the same: if the flue’s right, everything else is fine.

Common HeatShield Chimney Cleaning Problems We Fix in San Pedro
These are the HeatShield issues we see most often in San Pedro homes. Almost all of them trace back to water, not to the HeatShield material itself.
- Coating delaminating from the firebox brick. This shows up as the HeatShield layer lifting in sheets or peeling at the edges. Nearly every time, the flue above has no cap, or the crown is cracked, and rain drives straight down onto the firebox. You can’t re-coat over a delaminating surface and expect it to hold. The flue gets swept, the water entry gets sealed, then we re-bond the firebox.
- Hairline cracks reappearing after a previous resurfacing. If the original prep skipped grinding out the old mortar joints before the HeatShield went on, those underlying joints keep moving with every heating cycle. The cracks telegraph right back through the new coating. We grind back to sound masonry, fill the joints, and only then coat.
- Chalky, powdery breakdown on fireboxes used with gas logs. Gas logs burn cooler but produce acidic condensate. On a firebox that also sees salt-laden San Pedro air, that acid sits on the refractory surface and eats it. The coating turns chalky and soft. The fix is specific surface prep and a coating suited to gas appliance use.
- Spalling brick edges around the firebox opening. The HeatShield layer is only as good as the brick under it. When the exterior chimney crown leaks, water soaks down through the brick, and the edges of the firebox start to spall and flake. Bare masonry shows through the coating. We rebuild the spalled brick, seal the crown, and then resurface.
- Glazed creosote behind a coating failure. Sometimes the real problem isn’t the HeatShield at all. A firebox that’s been burning wet or unseasoned wood builds a layer of glazed creosote on the coating. It looks like black glass and it’s stubborn to remove. We clear the creosote first so we can actually see what the HeatShield layer underneath is doing.
HeatShield Parts & Our Repair-vs-Replace Approach
We use genuine HeatShield refractory products when we resurface a firebox: HeatShield Refractory Mortar, HeatShield Firex Crack Repair Compound, HeatShield Smoke Chamber Resurfacing for the throat area, and HeatShield Pre-Mixed Refractory Coating. A knockoff refractory mortar doesn’t handle the thermal cycling a fireplace puts on it, so we don’t use it, and we aren’t interested in whatever’s cheapest on the supply shelf. We do not stock OEM or genuine HeatShield parts, and we’re not a HeatShield dealer. We’re an independent shop that works with professional-grade materials and knows how to use them. Repair versus replace is an honest conversation on every job. If the brick behind the coating has structural cracks running through it, coating over them is wasted money. The firebox moves, the coating cracks, and you’re paying for the same repair twice. When the brick is sound and the failure is in the coating or the mortar joints, resurfacing with HeatShield materials is often the right call. If your San Pedro firebox is beyond coating, we’ll say so plainly and talk through brick replacement. Call (833) 576-1522 and we’ll come look at it. The estimate is free.
Our HeatShield Service Process – Step by Step
- 1
Diagnose the coating failure. We sweep the flue first. Can’t read a HeatShield surface through soot and creosote. Once it’s clean, we check how the coating is bonded, where cracks run, and whether water is entering from above or through the crown.
- 2
Fix the water problem before we coat. A HeatShield repair in San Pedro won’t hold if rain still pours down an uncapped flue. We install or repair the cap, seal crown joints, and address spalling brick so the firebox has a dry environment. Skip this and the next coating fails the same way.
- 3
Prep the firebox surface. We grind out loose mortar, remove delaminating HeatShield material, and get back to sound brick. The prep is the repair. Coating over a dirty or moving surface is why people call us after a failed resurfacing.
- 4
Apply the HeatShield refractory materials. Refractory mortar fills the joints, Firex handles the hairline cracks, and the pre-mixed coating goes on in the right thickness to bond, cure, and take the heat. We follow the cure times the materials call for, not the schedule that’s convenient.
- 5
Test the firebox and check the whole system. We run a draft check and make sure smoke actually carries up the flue. Then we look at the rest of the system: cap, crown, damper, and flue liner. The firebox doesn’t exist in isolation.
- 6
Stand behind the work. If something moves or cracks after we’ve repaired a firebox, we come back and look. Jerry’s been working San Pedro chimneys since 2016, and he wants the repair to outlast the conversation.

AfterHeatShield Products We Service & Install in San Pedro
We service and install the HeatShield products that apply to resurfacing and repair work around the firebox and smoke chamber: the Refractory Mortar that rebuilds mortar joints and fills voids, the Firex Crack Repair Compound for hairline cracking in the refractory surface, the Smoke Chamber Resurfacing system for the throat above the firebox, and the Pre-Mixed Refractory Coating for the firebox walls and floor. We don’t carry OEM or genuine HeatShield parts on the truck as a stock item. What we bring is the knowledge of how these materials should be applied, which ones fit which failure, and how a San Pedro chimney’s moisture conditions affect the cure. When the job calls for a different kind of flue repair, we also install and source DuraFlex flexible liner systems and we work with Gelco ventilation accessories, so we’re not trying to make a HeatShield coating fit a problem it can’t solve.
We Also Service These Brands
HeatShield is one tool in the box, not the whole box. We install and source DuraFlex flexible liner systems for flues that are damaged, offset, or unlined, and we work with Gelco caps, covers, and termination accessories to finish the job. Other brands we source from include Olympia Chimney, Famco, and Copperfield. That multi-brand depth means the actual problem gets the right product, not whatever we happen to be pushing that week.
FAQs – HeatShield Chimney Cleaning Service in San Pedro
No. We are an independent HeatShield service provider based in San Pedro, CA. We work with HeatShield refractory products and we know how they behave in this coastal environment, but we’re not factory-trained, certified, or authorized by the manufacturer. Independence doesn’t mean less expertise. It means our recommendations for your HeatShield repair come from what we see on your firebox, not from a brand program.
A HeatShield firebox coating that keeps cracking is usually telling you the underlying mortar joints were never ground out before the coating went on, or water is entering the chimney from an uncapped flue or leaking crown. In San Pedro, the salt air keeps the exterior masonry damp, which makes the moisture problem worse. If you re-coat without stopping the water, the cracks return. We diagnose both the coating and the water entry before quoting anything. Call (833) 576-1522 for a free estimate.
No coating can fix structural cracks in the brick. If the brick is cracked all the way through, the firebox moves as it heats and cools, and any refractory material on top of it will crack too. Resurfacing over structural cracks is wasted money, and we’ll tell you so. When the brick is sound and the problem is in the mortar joints or the coating surface, HeatShield resurfacing can be the right repair.
The chalky white breakdown on a gas log firebox comes from acidic condensate, not from the HeatShield material itself. Gas logs burn cooler, so the combustion byproducts condense on the firebox surface. In San Pedro’s damp marine air, that acid sits on the coating longer and eats into the refractory surface. We prep the firebox to remove the degraded coating and apply a refractory product suited to gas appliance conditions. Call (833) 576-1522 if your gas firebox looks chalky or powdery.
Yes, always. You can’t tell what a HeatShield surface is doing through a layer of soot and creosote. The coating might be cracked under the deposits, or the creosote is hiding moisture damage. We sweep first, inspect the firebox clean, and then decide what repair the surface actually needs. Skipping the sweep means coating over a problem you can’t see.
A chimney cap is one of the most protective things you can put on a San Pedro chimney. Rain funneling down an uncapped flue lands right on the firebox and soaks into the HeatShield layer. That’s how coatings lift in sheets and delaminate from the brick. A properly installed cap stops the direct water entry, and combined with a sealed crown, it gives the firebox a chance to stay dry. We won’t do a HeatShield repair on an uncapped flue without addressing the cap, because the repair won’t hold. Call (833) 576-1522 to have us look at your cap, crown, and firebox together.
